The promenade at Bexhill on Sea on Englands south coast is dominated by the recently restored Pavilion, a 1930s masterpiece by Mendelsohn and Chermayeff. Between that and the sea Niall McLaughlin has created a new bandstand like an abstracted seagull, with two wings hovering over performers and projecting sound towards the audience. Inventively made of fibreglass and plywood with a stiffening steel frame, the bandstand can be moved around for different functions. It is a small, ingenious and jolly addition to seaside life.
