Soo Chan of SCDA was asked to make a place for contemplation in Malacca, Malaysia. He took the envelope of a ruined Chinese shophouse and reinterpreted that immemorial building type by, roughly, replacing the voids with solids and vice-versa. As much as possible of the old party walls has been preserved, while the new parts are in crisp and precise contrast. Materiality, light, tradition and climate have been carefully studied. The result is a moving meditation on past and present. Contact: Chan Soo Khian, SCDA Architects Tel: Fax: Email: |
